Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is one of the most common conditions in Australia — and one of the most overlooked. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around 3 in 10 Australian adults have moderate to severe periodontitis, yet many do not realise anything is wrong until significant damage has already occurred. Gum disease is largely painless in its early stages, which is precisely why it progresses so far before people seek help.

At Kaleen Family Dental Surgery, Dr Henny diagnoses and treats gum disease at every stage — from first-visit gingivitis through to ongoing periodontal maintenance for patients managing long-term disease. The earlier it is caught, the simpler the treatment.

Understanding Gum Disease: Gingivitis vs Periodontitis

Gum disease progresses in two distinct stages. Knowing which stage you are in determines the treatment required.

Stage 1: Gingivitis

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue caused by plaque accumulating along the gumline. The gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily often first noticed on the toothbrush or when flossing. At this stage, no permanent damage has been done to the bone or ligaments holding your teeth in place.

Gingivitis is completely reversible with professional treatment and improved home care. It does not progress to periodontitis if it is caught and treated at this stage.

Stage 2: Periodontitis

When gingivitis is left untreated, bacteria penetrate below the gumline and infect the structures that anchor your teeth the periodontal ligament and the underlying bone. The gums begin to pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that trap more bacteria and accelerate the destruction.

Periodontitis cannot be cured but it can be controlled. With proper treatment and consistent maintenance, the disease can be stabilised and tooth loss prevented. Without treatment, bone loss continues silently until teeth begin to loosen and eventually fall out. Periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over 35 in Australia.

Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss — even occasionally

  • Red, puffy, or tender gums that look darker than pale pink

  • Persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing

  • Gums that appear to be pulling back from your teeth

  • Teeth that feel sensitive along the gumline

  • A gap or change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite

  • Any tooth that feels loose or has shifted position

What Causes Gum Disease?

The direct cause is always plaque the sticky bacterial film that forms on teeth. When plaque is not consistently removed by brushing and flossing, it hardens into tartar (calculus), which cannot be removed at home and requires professional instruments to clear. Tartar below the gumline drives the inflammation that becomes gum disease.

Several factors significantly increase a person's risk or the speed of disease progression:

Smoking or vaping — reduces blood flow to the gums and masks bleeding, meaning disease advances silently

Diabetes — poorly controlled blood sugar makes gums more vulnerable to infection, and gum disease in turn makes blood sugar harder to manage

Pregnancy — hormonal changes cause gums to react more strongly to plaque (pregnancy gingivitis)

Certain medications — some antihistamines, antidepressants, and blood pressure medications reduce saliva or cause gum overgrowth

Genetic predisposition — some people have a strong inherited susceptibility to periodontal disease regardless of hygiene

Irregular or absent dental visits — allows tartar to build below the gumline unchecked

Gum Disease Treatments We Provide at Our Kaleen Clinic

Gingivitis Clean

For gingivitis, we perform a thorough professional clean removing plaque and tartar above and just below the gumline, plus oral hygiene instruction. Most patients improve within two to four weeks as inflammation settles. With good home care, disease is usually fully reversible.

Deep Cleaning

For periodontitis, we provide deep cleaning under local anaesthetic, removing plaque, tartar and toxins from root surfaces within periodontal pockets. Treatment is completed over two to four visits, one section at a time. Gums then heal and reattach to cleaned roots.

Pocket Charting

We measure pocket depths around each tooth before and after treatment using a probe. Healthy gums are 1–3 mm; 4 mm or more indicates disease. This charting guides treatment, tracks progress, and highlights sites needing targeted cleaning and monitoring.

Antibiotic Support

Where infection is active or persistent, Dr Henny may prescribe a short antibiotic course to reduce bacterial load. This is used alongside mechanical cleaning, not instead of it, as antibiotics cannot remove hardened tartar or biofilm from root surfaces.

Ongoing Care

Periodontitis is chronic and requires lifelong maintenance. Patients usually attend every three to four months for monitoring, cleaning, and reinforcement of home care. Returning to six-monthly visits too soon commonly leads to relapse, so recall intervals are tailored individually.

Refer to Specialist

For advanced cases, including significant bone loss or deep pockets unresponsive to non-surgical care, Dr Henny refers to a periodontist. We coordinate with trusted Canberra specialists for procedures like gum grafting or regeneration, ensuring continuity and clear communication throughout treatment.

Why Gum Disease Affects More Than Your Mouth

Gum disease is more than a dental issue. Chronic periodontitis allows bacteria and inflammatory markers to enter the bloodstream, driving inflammation across the body and affecting overall health beyond the mouth.

Research links periodontitis with higher risk of cardiovascular disease, poorer control of type 2 diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and respiratory infections. Treating gum disease supports whole-body health, not just your smile, and reduces long-term medical risks.

Frequently asked questions

My gums bleed but don't hurt — is that still a problem?

Yes. Bleeding gums are a sign of inflammation and should not be ignored, even if there's no pain. Healthy gums don't bleed. Pain is often not a reliable indicator of gum disease — many patients with significant gum issues experience no discomfort. Early detection is key, so seek an assessment as soon as possible.

Can gum disease go away on its own?

No. While gingivitis can be reversed with professional treatment and proper home care, it doesn't resolve on its own. The harmful bacteria causing gum disease need to be physically removed by a dental professional. Periodontitis, a more severe form, will worsen without treatment.

I had a scale and clean recently — could I still have gum disease?

Possibly. A routine scale and clean removes plaque and tartar above the gumline, but if you have periodontitis with deep pockets, standard cleaning may not address the bacteria beneath the gumline. Pocket depth measurement is crucial for assessing gum health — ask your dentist about a periodontal assessment if you're concerned.

How long does gum disease treatment take?

Gingivitis treatment is usually just a professional clean, which most patients find comfortable. For periodontitis, deep cleaning is done under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is pain-free. You may experience some tenderness or sensitivity afterward, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients find it much more manageable than expected.

Is a check-up and clean covered by health insurance?

Gingivitis treatment usually requires one or two appointments. For periodontitis, deep cleaning is spread across two to four visits over several weeks, with a follow-up reassessment 6-8 weeks later. Ongoing maintenance will continue based on your gum health, with visits scheduled as needed.

Will my health fund cover gum disease treatment?

Many private health extras policies cover treatments like scale and clean, periodontal charting, and root planing, but coverage varies. The rebate depends on your specific policy and annual limits. We offer HICAPS on-site for easy claims processing, so you’ll know your out-of-pocket cost before treatment begins.
